Be Scientific Proudly Partners with Sigma: Sustainability Through Science and Innovation
At Be Scientific, we are proud to be the exclusive UK supplier of Sigma centrifuges, bringing laboratories across the UK access to some of the most reliable and innovative centrifugation technology available today.
However, our partnership with Sigma goes beyond supplying high-performance laboratory equipment. It is built on a shared commitment to sustainability, responsible business practices, and creating a positive impact for future generations.
Sustainability as a Collective Effort
As a third-generation family business, Sigma believes that sustainability is not simply about conserving resources - it is about actively shaping a better future for employees, customers, communities and the scientific industries they serve.
What makes Sigma's approach particularly impressive is its belief that meaningful change can only be achieved through collaboration. Working closely alongside its sister company Christ, Sigma develops and implements sustainability initiatives that deliver long-term environmental, social, and economic benefits.
This collaborative approach aligns closely with Be Scientific's own values. We recognise that scientific progress and environmental responsibility must go hand in hand, and we are proud to support manufacturers who are investing in a more sustainable future.
Values That Drive Action
Sigma's sustainability strategy is firmly rooted in a set of core values that guide everyday decision-making:
- Responsibility - Taking accountability for employees, customers, partners, and the environment.
- Long-Term Thinking - Building sustainable success while considering future generations.
- Innovation - Investing in technologies that balance environmental responsibility with business growth.
- Appreciation - Creating positive working environments built on trust, respect, and fairness.
- Integrity - Operating transparently, ethically, and responsibly.
These principles are not simply statements on paper. They are embedded throughout Sigma's sustainability mission, code of conduct, and business operations.
Structured Sustainability with Measurable Goals
To ensure sustainability remains a core business priority, Sigma has appointed dedicated sustainability contacts across relevant departments and established a formal sustainability management structure.
In early 2025, the company completed its first double materiality analysis, helping identify and prioritise the environmental, social, and governance issues most relevant to its business and stakeholders.
This structured approach demonstrates Sigma's commitment to making sustainability measurable, accountable, and continuously improving.
Investing in Sustainable Technology
As an innovative engineering company, Sigma continually invests in technologies that reduce environmental impact while maintaining exceptional product performance.
One standout example is the transition to environmentally friendly refrigeration technologies. Beginning as early as 2009, Sigma was among the first manufacturers worldwide to adopt natural refrigerants. By 2024, all laboratory and pilot systems had been fully converted to flammable natural refrigerants with exceptionally low Global Warming Potential (GWP).
This allows customers to benefit from outstanding performance while significantly reducing environmental impact.
Energy-Efficient Facilities and Renewable Power
Sigma has also made significant investments in improving the sustainability of its facilities.
Modern heat pump systems provide energy-efficient heating and cooling, while intelligent heat recovery technology captures and reuses waste heat generated during operations. These innovations help reduce overall energy consumption while maintaining comfortable working environments.
Solar power plays an important role too. Photovoltaic systems generate renewable electricity on-site, helping reduce reliance on conventional energy sources and increasing energy independence.
Building on these efforts, Sigma's Osterode site has sourced 100% certified green electricity since 2025, significantly reducing direct emissions and supporting the wider transition to renewable energy.
Reducing Waste Through Smarter Logistics
Sustainability extends beyond manufacturing and energy use. Sigma has also focused on reducing waste throughout its logistics operations.
By reusing packaging materials wherever possible, minimising plastic usage, and optimising shipping processes to reduce transport volumes, the company is helping conserve valuable resources while improving operational efficiency.
These practical measures demonstrate how sustainability can be integrated into every stage of a product's journey.
Proud to Work Alongside Sigma
At Be Scientific, we believe that scientific excellence and environmental responsibility should go hand in hand. That is why we are proud to represent Sigma centrifuges in the UK.
By partnering with manufacturers who share our commitment to innovation, quality, and sustainability, we can help laboratories achieve their scientific goals while supporting a more responsible future for our industry.
As sustainability continues to shape the future of laboratory science, we look forward to working alongside Sigma and our customers to drive positive change together.
